Primitivo is the Italian name for Zinfandel typically grown in the Puglia region of south eastern Italy. Thurston Wolfe was the first winery to plant the varietal in Washington State at the Zephyr Ridge Vineyard. Primitivo and Zinfandel are actually both clones of a Croatian grape called Crljenak Kastelanski. (“sirl yenak kassel ansky“) This wine originated on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast and tends to ripen earlier due to the lesser amount of berries per cluster.
Our Primitivo was aged in new American oak for 18 months before bottling with only 50 cases produced.
